Born in Montenegro, he studied dramaturgy at the Academy for Theatre, Film, and Television in Belgrade but left before graduating to publish his first novel,&nbsp;<em>Gubili\u0161te<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>The Gallows<\/em>, 1962).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout his career, Kova\u010d was known for his uncompromising artistic integrity. His works, often critical of political and social systems, faced censorship and persecution both in Communist Yugoslavia and later in Serbia under Milo\u0161evi\u0107. Despite these challenges, his writing received great critical acclaim and reached an international readership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He was the recipient of many prestigious literary awards, including the NIN Award, the Me\u0161a Selimovi\u0107 Award, the Vladimir Nazor Award, and the Kiklop Award for Lifetime Achievement in Literature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cI am not one of those writers with a large audience, but I have always had loyal readers. I am part of the cultural and intellectual landscape rather than someone concerned with numbers. When people ask for whom I write, I always say: for literature. And literature, you must admit, is a great spell.\u201d \u2014&nbsp;<em>from an interview<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among his most notable works are&nbsp;<em>Gubili\u0161te<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>The Gallows<\/em>, 1962),&nbsp;<em>Moja sestra Elida<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>My Sister Elida<\/em>, 1965),&nbsp;<em>\u017divotopis Malvine Trifkovi\u0107<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>The Life of Malvina Trifkovi\u0107<\/em>, 1971),&nbsp;<em>Ruganje s du\u0161om<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>Mockery with a Passion<\/em>, 1976),&nbsp;<em>Vrata od utrobe<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>Door to the Insides<\/em>, 1978),&nbsp;<em>Uvod u drugi \u017eivot<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>An Introduction to Another Life<\/em>, 1983),&nbsp;<em>Kristalne re\u0161etke<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>Crystal Lattices<\/em>, 1995),&nbsp;<em>Grad u zrcalu<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>The City in the Mirror<\/em>, 2007), and&nbsp;<em>Vrijeme koje se udaljava<\/em>&nbsp;(<em>Time Which Fades<\/em>, 2013).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kova\u010d also wrote several acclaimed screenplays and plays, including\u00a0<em>Lisice<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Handcuffs<\/em>, 1969),\u00a0<em>Pad Italije<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Fall of Italy<\/em>, 1981), and\u00a0<em>Mali vojnici<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Playing Soldier<\/em>, 1967).
