He studied English language and literature at the Faculty of Philosophy in Belgrade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1944, he joined the National Liberation Movement and later worked as a journalist in Novi Sad. Ti\u0161ma spent much of his professional life at\u00a0<em>Matica Srpska<\/em>, first as secretary and later as editor, including six years as editor of\u00a0<em>Letopis Matice Srpske<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His writing\u2014translated into more than twenty languages\u2014explores themes of the Holocaust, human cruelty, and moral complexity. He is regarded as one of the most important Yugoslav writers of the twentieth century. Ti\u0161ma\u2019s best-known novel,\u00a0<em>Upotreba \u010doveka<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Use of a Man<\/em>, 1976), earned him the Nolit Award, the NIN Award, and the Serbian Library\u2019s Award for the most-read book of 1978.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His ouvre includes works such as<em>Begunci<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Fugitives<\/em>, 1981),\u00a0<em>Vere i zavere<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Faith and Treason<\/em>, 1983),\u00a0<em>Kapo<\/em>\u00a0(1987),\u00a0<em>\u0160iroka vrata<\/em>\u00a0(<em>The Wide Door<\/em>, 1989),\u00a0<em>Koje volimo<\/em>\u00a0(<em>Those We Love<\/em>, 1990).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s like people. Even nations borrow from each other. Nothing is born in a vacuum, nothing develops from itself alone\u2026 All life is imitation.\u201d \u2014\u00a0<em>The Use of a Man<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2016 the \u201cAleksandar Ti\u0161ma\u201d Foundation was established, which since 2019 has awarded the annual \u201cAleksandar Ti\u0161ma\u201d Literary Prize.
