During the debate \u201cCocktail of Cultures: Austrian Cosmopolitanism Then and Now\u201d on Thursday, December 17th at 7pm, we\u2019ll be talking about the many social and ethnic groups, cultures and views that shaped the Vienna and the Austria of before, during and after the era of the Habsburgs, as well as different influences that transformed both the city and the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After last month\u2019s news about the Vienna terrorist attack, the security of a city we perceived as indestructible and cosmopolitan is under question, while the spirit of people all around Austria is strongly shaken. What kind of coexistence does Vienna need? Is it possible to restore the true feelings of peace and security it once had? In what way can culture and art influence this process? Those are only some of the questions journalist Ljubica Gojgi\u0107 will be asking our two additional participants – political scientist Ivan Vejvoda from the Vienna Institute for Human Sciences and famous Austrian writer and historian Andreas Pittler.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Vienna, a metropolis marked by its artistic and intellectual heritage, museums and palaces, offers at first glance, a safe haven for anyone who needs it. What happens, however, once a tragic event suddenly sheds light on the many issues boiling under the surface of this city? Did the real multiculturalism of Vienna ever exist? And what are we supposed to do once we realize that even there, as well as in many other European cities, high culture, art, traditions and modern life can go hand in hand with violence, dissatisfaction, anger, alienation and even terrorism?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Join us on Thursday, December 17th at 7pm on the YouTube channel Krokodil Engaging Words and help us start a discussion of a complex and important topic that\u2019s been troubling many countries of the European Union to this day. The debate will be held in English. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
