In the period from March 21 until today, we have learned through the media that four women died as a result of femicide. According to the press, a woman was killed by a neighbor in Zaje\u010dar two days ago, after several years of continual harassment, which she reported to the authorities several times. A woman from Vranje died at the hospital after her husband stabbed her, and two women from Belgrade and Smederevska Palanka were killed by their sons.* In the same period, the media reported at least seven attempts of femicide and violence against women. While all this is happening, the institutions responsible for preventing and combating violence against women are not reacting or addressing the distressed public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It is especially worrying that in the mentioned cases, even after the report of violence, the responsible institutions did not ensure the protection and safety of these women. The large number of murders of women were not prevented due to the lack of a quick and efficient reaction of the institutions of the system, which range from a slow reaction to reports of violence to minimizing the danger and failing to consider the risk of endangering the safety of the victim.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite numerous recommendations from international human rights bodies and women’s NGOs, there are still no publicly available statistics on the prevalence of femicide in Serbia. On the other hand, the use of currently available protection mechanisms in an adequate and consistent manner would significantly improve the protection of women from violence and prevent a large number of femicides. The lack of effective prevention of femicide, as the most extreme manifestation of violence, sends a message to women that their lives are less valuable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We demand from the institutions responsible for the prevention and protection of women from violence to urgently react<\/strong> to the latest cases of femicide, investigate and explain to the public possible gaps <\/strong>and lack of effective response to previous reports of violence and state precise steps for further prevention of femicide.<\/strong> Obligations, standards, and plans to prevent gender-based violence against women and to prevent femicide do exist, but effective action is needed, and not just a declarative commitment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n Almost every femicide could have been prevented.<\/strong> And every institution has a responsibility and obligation to work on the prevention of femicide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n *Available data show that 67% of femicides were committed in a partnership-family relationship (in 48.8% the killer is a former or current partner, and in 18.3% a son) – Attempts at femicide and femicide in Serbia: prevention and prosecution<\/em>, FemPlatz and Female Research Center for Education and Communication, 2020<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n The request is signed by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n <\/p>\n\n\n\n Individuals: <\/p>\n\n\n\n In the period from March 21 until today, we have learned through the media that four women died as a result of femicide.
