Should we be surprised that someone regularly vandalizes the monument of Branko \u0106opi\u0107 in a city contaminated with murals that glorify convicted war criminals and foreign presidents whose arms are stained to the elbows with the blood of innocent civilians? We installed this work of our world-famous illustrator Du\u0161an Petri\u010di\u0107 two months ago on the Male stepenice, near Branko’s Bridge, a place where this sad man and quintessential children’s writer of many generations tragically ended his life by jumping. So far, we have had to clean it several times from the car paint that someone, whose identity is unknown to us and whose actions we completely fail to understand, persistently uses to scribble over the eyes of this beautiful portrait of \u0106opi\u0107. Numerous things show us every day that there is a systemic and structural distortion in our society, what we most often call a distorted value system. This is by no means an insignificant reflection of this syndrome. Because a society in which villains are glorified and children’s writers are in this way devalued, has every reason to worry about its own future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
