Born in Subotica, he survived the Holocaust and completed his secondary education in Cetinje, Montenegro. He graduated from the University of Belgrade with a degree in Comparative Literature and Literary Theory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ki\u0161 worked as a writer, dramaturge at the Belgrade theater Atelier 212, and as a lecturer in Serbo-Croatian at several French universities. He wrote short stories, novels, essays, plays, and television scripts, and translated poetry from French and Hungarian.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His first works, <em>Mansarda<\/em> (<em>The Mansard<\/em>) and <em>Psalm 44<\/em> (1962), were followed by the acclaimed novel <em>Ba\u0161ta, pepeo<\/em> (<em>Garden, Ashes<\/em>, 1965\/1978), in which he created a haunting portrait of his father, who perished in Auschwitz. He continued this autobiographical cycle with <em>Rani jadi<\/em> (<em>Early Sorrows<\/em>, 1968) and <em>Pe\u0161\u010danik<\/em> (<em>Hourglass<\/em>, 1972), for which he received the NIN Award for Best Novel in Yugoslavia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cIt is hard to lift up your own misfortune, to be at once the viewer and the viewed&#8230; To consider your own person in the light of eternity (read: in the light of death). The world from a bird\u2019s-eye view.\u201d \u2014 <em>Hourglass<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A stylistic innovator and moral realist, Ki\u0161 faced political attacks after the publication of <em>Grobnica za Borisa Davidovi\u010da<\/em> (<em>A Tomb for Boris Davidovich<\/em>, 1976), a collection of stories exposing Stalinist terror. In response, he published <em>\u010cas anatomije<\/em> (<em>The Anatomy Lesson<\/em>, 1978), a sharp polemic defending literary integrity and freedom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Living later in Paris, Ki\u0161 wrote <em>Enciklopedija mrtvih<\/em> (<em>The Encyclopedia of the Dead<\/em>, 1983), one of his most celebrated works. He received numerous awards, including the Ivo Andri\u0107 Prize (1984) and the Bruno Schulz Prize (1989), and was named Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France (1986). His works have been translated into many languages and continue to resonate worldwide for their moral depth, historical insight, and elegant prose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Danilo Ki\u0161<\/strong> bio je knji\u017eevnik, prevodilac i jedan od najuglednijih knji\u017eevnih autora 20. veka. Ro\u0111en u Subotici, pre\u017eiveo je Holokaust i zavr\u0161io srednjo\u0161kolsko obrazovanje u Cetinju, na Crnogorskom primorju. Diplomirao je na Filolo\u0161kom fakultetu u Beogradu na katedri za Op\u0161tu knji\u017eevnost i teoriju knji\u017eevnosti.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ki\u0161 je radio kao pisac, dramaturg u beogradskom pozori\u0161tu Atelje 212, i kao predava\u010d srpskohrvatskog jezika na vi\u0161e francuskih univerziteta.
