She earned her degree in English language and literature from the University of Belgrade, and later completed graduate studies in dramaturgy at Southern Illinois University in the United States. In the 1990s, she left Belgrade and settled in Rijeka, Croatia, where she obtained her Ph.D. in philosophy and became a professor in the English Department, teaching courses on modern British literature, Anglo-American modern drama, and creative writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Between 1995 and 1997, Drndi\u0107 lived in Canada before returning to Croatia, where she published <em>Marija Cz\u0119stohowska jo\u0161 uvijek roni suze ili Umiranje u Torontu<\/em> (<em>Maria Cz\u0119stohowska Still Shedding Tears or Dying in Toronto<\/em>, 1997) and <em>Canzone di Guerra<\/em> (1998). Both novels explore themes of migration, displacement, and the fragile nature of identity, as well as the tension between old and new worlds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Her internationally acclaimed novel <em>Belladonna<\/em> (2012) centers on Andreas Ban, a retired psychologist and writer living alone on the Croatian coast. Aging and ailing, Ban sifts through fragments of his life\u2014his memories, medical files, books, and the ruins of history\u2014reflecting on the Second World War, the dissolution of Yugoslavia, and the erosion of personal and collective memory. Drndi\u0107\u2019s writing blends historical reflection with unflinching irony and moral clarity. \u201cThe past is riddled with holes,\u201d she writes. \u201cSouvenirs can\u2019t help here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>en translated into English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Hungarian, Polish, Slovenian, Finnish, Albanian, and Macedonian, Drndi\u0107 examined how history\u2014especially its silences\u2014shapes human lives. Her recurring motifs include the repetition of historical trauma, the persistence of memory, and the way private and collective histories intertwine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>\u201cMemories die as soon as they are plucked from their surroundings; they burst, lose color, lose suppleness, stiffen like corpses. The past is riddled with holes. Souvenirs can\u2019t help here. Everything must be thrown away. Everything. And perhaps everyone as well.\u201d<br>\u2014 <em>Belladonna<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Da\u0161a Drndi\u0107 (1946\u20132018) bila je knji\u017eevnica, prevodilac i univerzitetska profesorka. Diplomirala je na katedri za engleski jezik i knji\u017eevnost u Beogradu, a zatim nastavila master studije dramaturgije na Ju\u017enom Illinoisu. Tokom devedesetih godina, napustila je Beograd i preselila se u Rijeku. Tamo je doktorirala iz oblasti filozofije, a kasnije je postala profesorka na odseku za engleski jezik, dr\u017ee\u0107i predavanja o savremenoj britanskoj knji\u017eevnosti, anglo-ameri\u010dkom modernom dramskom stvarala\u0161tvu, kreativnom pisanju i drugim temama.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Godine 1995. se na dve godine preselila u Kanadu, a zatim se vratila u Hrvatsku, gde je objavila roman <em>Marija Cz\u0119stohowska jo\u0161 uvek roni suze<\/em> ili <em>Umiranje u Torontu<\/em> i <em>Canzone di Guerra<\/em> godinu dana kasnije. Oba romana tematizuju emigraciju i njen uticaj na identitet \u010doveka, kao i tenziju izme\u0111u starog i novog sveta.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Njen svetski proslavljen roman \u201cBeladona\u201d prati junaka Andreasa Bana, penzionisanog psihologa i pisca koji \u017eivi sam na hrvatskoj obali. Dok stari Ban pre\u010de\u0161ljava po fragmentima sopstvenog \u017eivota \u2013 svojim se\u0107anjima, medicinskoj dokumentaciji, knjigama i ostacima istorije \u2013 razmi\u0161ljaju\u0107i o Drugom svetskom ratu, raspadu Jugoslavije, i eroziji li\u010dnog i kolektivnog se\u0107anja. Dela Da\u0161e Drndi\u0107 sjedinjuje promi\u0161ljanja o istoriji sa moralnom \u010disto\u0107om i nepokolebljivom ironijom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201eBio je fa\u0161izam, bio je komunizam, pa bauk komunizma. Sad toga vi\u0161e, kao, nema, a prljav\u0161tina tog vremena zatrpana je pod tepih. Tu je, sve je tu, skriveno, preoblikovano u demokratiju koja to nije.\u201c<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Da\u0161a je napisala 13 romana, od kojih su neki me\u0111unarodno nagra\u0111ivani i prevedeni na engleski, francuski, nema\u010dki, poljski, holandski, ma\u0111arski, slovena\u010dki, italijanski, finski, albanski i makedonski, a neki fragmenti preto\u010deni su i u jo\u0161 vi\u0161e jezika.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Da\u0161a Drndi\u0107 was a distinguished writer, translator, and university professor.
