Writer in Exile Serbia

Freedom of expression and written word that is in the West almost taken for granted, continues to be challenged in many other parts of the world. There are still numerous societies in which writers are often under the attack of their respective repressive regimes because they are usually the first to raise their voice against injustice and repression due to the fact that language and words are their primary tools and means of expression.

Because of all this, it is of utmost importance to recognize the plight of persecuted and exiled writers and to offer more safe havens for them and their families, thus directly helping them in transitioning while in the same time continuing with their important work uninterrupted. The aim of the project is, besides its’ purely humanitarian character, also to promote values of democracy and cross-cultural engagement. After five years of running fully functional Writer-in-Residence program in Serbia Krokodil has so far gained high national, regional and European credibility as well as sufficient experience for this step forward – towards establishing the first Writer in Exile program not only in Serbia but also in the region of the Western Balkans.

The main objective of this project is to establish the very first Writer-in-Exile program in Serbia offering a mutual benefit for persecuted writers and their families on one hand and host community on another, in order to advance coexistence and understanding.

The goal is to allow practical support to refugee writers, writers in political jeopardy and writers who are facing persecution or immediate, severe and targeted threats to their lives, personal and/or artistic freedom in their home countries or countries of residence by providing them with the long-term sanctuary and financial help as an effective means for humanitarian and cultural activism, social integration and inter-cultural dialogue.
