
15 Aug Living legends of contemporary Ukrainian literature – Mykola Riabchuk and Natalka Bilotserkivets, writers-in-residence in august 2025
Ukrainian prose writer and essayist Mykola Riabchuk and poet and essayist Natalka Bilotserkivets are spending the month of August in Belgrade as KROKODIL’s writers-in-residence, the first regional and the longest lasting program of its kind. As 147th and 148th writers-in-residence they are among the living legends of contemporary Ukrainian literature.They will present themselves to the public at an event in KROKODIL’s Center on Tuesday, August 26th, starting at 6 PM. The conversation will be moderated by Vladimir Arsenijević.
Mykola Riabchuk is a Ukrainian prose writer and essayist, the honorary president of the Ukrainian PEN-center and a co-founder and member of the editorial board of the Kyiv-based Krytyka monthly. He penned dozen books translated into several languages, including Serbian (Od Malorusije do Ukrajine, 2003), and received a number of national and international awards, including Taras Shevchenko national prize in arts and literature (2022) and Jerzy Giedroyc Prize (2024) for his contribution in Polish-Ukrainian mutual understanding. While in Belgrade, he will be working on a book-length project – “Repossessions”, a collection of essays and short stories.
Natalka Bilotserkivets is a Ukrainian poet and essayist, the author of seven books and many articles on Ukrainian and foreign culture and literature. Her poems were anthologized in many languages (primarily English, Polish, and German), and distinguished with several national and international awards. Two of her books, published in English – Subterranean Fire (2021), and Eccentric Days of Hope and Sorrow (2022) were shortlisted for the Griffin Poetry Prize and the Derek Walcott prize. While at Krokodil residency, she is working on her new collection of poems Lost & Found.

The KROKODIL Association, as an independent organization dedicated to creating literary, cultural, and socio-political programs, has decided to provide shelter and support to Ukrainian literary creators on top of other activities related to Ukraine. Following two successfully realized cycles of the emergency residency program called “Spaces of Freedom” and “Spaces of Resilience,” conducted during 2022, 2023, and 2024, we have decided to continue providing assistance to Ukrainian literary creators.
