KROKODIL FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE CITIZENS OF KHERSON, UKRAINE

KROKODIL FOR THE MOST VULNERABLE CITIZENS OF KHERSON, UKRAINE

Russia’s aggressive attacks on Ukraine are still ongoing. In certain areas, such as the city of Kherson, they are even intensifying further. The primary victims of these brutal acts are innocent civilians, primarily children. To make matters worse, the citizens of Kherson face yet another icy winter that must be survived one way or another.

To stay or to leave?

As Russian strikes intensify, parents now face a terrifying choice: face the bombs as a family or at least get their children to safety. Amid the growing danger, a programme was established to temporarily evacuate children to camps in the mountains of western Ukraine.

Every day, children board buses marked “Evacuation” to recover away from explosions and sirens.

Explosions can be heard in the distance, while the families of the evacuees talk, with laughter and tears.

Children are a rare sight in Kherson today. A few flying kites can be seen in the sandbagged playgrounds, and one of the few options is to go out with your parents after dark when airstrikes are less frequent.

Kherson has been under daily attack since Ukrainian forces recaptured it last November after eight months under Russian occupation. It lies on the west bank of the Dnieper River under Ukrainian control, but in reality on the front line that divides the warring parties.

“Surviving in Kherson today, whether on the street or in a house, is a matter of chance”, says Father Sergiy, the parish priest of the Baptist Church in this city, as we discussed the protocol for distributing direct aid to the local citizens.

For the third time, KROKODIL is launching a humanitarian action to collect aid for vulnerable people in Ukraine, and together with the humanitarian aid we collect, we will be heading for Kherson in mid-February.

Although we are aware that the world’s attention is currently focused on the next in an uninterrupted series of tragic wars, on the one that most directly affects innocent civilians in Palestine, and towards which, understandably, practically all media attention is directed, and although we would like to help all of those who suffer as a result of war, our options are limited by the fact that there is currently no accessible and safe route through which humanitarian aid can be delivered directly to the most vulnerable population. In the firm belief that concrete and tangible forms of aid are more necessary than abstract engagements on social networks, KROKODIL’s delegation will once again head to Ukraine, specifically to the Kherson region in mid-February 2024, to personally deliver aid to civilians caught in the middle of military operations.

The packages with basic food items that KROKODIL’s delegation will take with them will be delivered directly to the residents of Kherson who gather every day at the so-called Point of Invincibility at the local Baptist church, which unstintingly and without discrimination delivers humanitarian aid to those who need it most.
