REPORTING AS RESCUE: When Journalism Becomes Emergency Aid

REPORTING AS RESCUE: When Journalism Becomes Emergency Aid

Last Friday, May 8, the KROKODIL Center hosted a high-profile, full-day conference organized in collaboration with Pro Peace to mark both World Press Freedom Day and Europe Day. The full KROKODIL center was filled with more than 30 participants, including local media outlets, diplomats, and CSO representatives, creating a vibrant atmosphere for high quality dialogue and open discussions.

The conference covered a range of topics related to the media landscape in four countries: Hungary, Montenegro, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and Serbia. We discussed the role the media played in the recently concluded election campaign in Hungary and the long-standing struggle against a repressive system; media regulation in Montenegro within the framework of accelerated EU integration; media sustainability; and an in-depth look at the media scene in Bosnia and Herzegovina. We also reflected on the recently published Reporters Without Borders report and gathered colleagues from across Serbia to speak openly about professional pressures, limits of endurance, and what continues to motivate us in this profession.

Featuring distinguished keynote speakers — Prof. Gábor Polyák (Hungary), Boro Kontić (Bosnia and Herzegovina), Željka Zvicer (Montenegro), Prof. Dinko Gruhonjić, and Prof. Snježana Milivojević (Serbia) — the day was much more than a conference; it was a unique, high-profile space for exchange and learning in a safe environment.
