16 Apr SLAPP BACK FUND ESTABLISHED: SUPPORT FOR ACTIVISTS IN LEGAL BATTLE AGAINST SLAPP LAWSUITS

By opening a separate account, creating a visual identity, and forming a working group, the SLAPP BACK fund for aiding activists has been officially established. The fund was organically created as an initiative of citizens in response to the growing threat of strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPP lawsuits), which are filed with the intention of intimidating, burdening, punishing, or harassing the defendant due to public speech on matters of general interest. The fund will be financed exclusively through individual donations from citizens and aims to provide legal support to activists who want to defend their violated rights through institutions.

In a recent fundraising campaign for activist Aida Ćorović – On the Front Line, a total of 713,208.98 was collected from 185 individuals. After payment to the Misdemeanor Court for Aida’s release, the remaining amount of 613,208.98 dinars was allocated to the newly established SLAPP BACK fund.

SLAPP lawsuits pose a serious threat to freedom of speech in Serbia as they are filed with the intent of intimidating, burdening, punishing, or harassing the defendant for public speech on matters of general interest. Such lawsuits hinder the work of activists, take up their time, and threaten their confidence. Legal proceedings, which can last for years and involve the costs of court fees and legal representation, often lead to the financial depletion of the defendant.

The SLAPP BACK fund will assist activists in their legal battle to defend their violated rights, protecting freedom of speech and public expression of opinions in Serbia.
