A month ago the KROKODIL Association launched a humanitarian campaign to raise funds for the “Kapitoška” kindergarten in Bucha, a suburb of Kyiv. The kindergarten director contacted us asking for help to obtain an electric generator of 30–50 kW. Due to air strikes on the capital’s power infrastructure, the kindergarten is frequently without electricity, heating, and the ability to prepare hot meals.

We knew the conditions for the children at this kindergarten — 167 in total — were very difficult. Most of the time they spend in dark basement rooms, while the kindergarten itself is very cold because of low winter temperatures. After colleagues from the “Dobro Dobrim” Association visited the kindergarten, it turned out the situation was even worse than we had imagined. The roof of the building leaks and needs repair. In addition, during the attacks on Bucha electrical equipment was stolen from the kindergarten, such as a washing machine, which is one of the institution’s basic needs.

We are aware that the amount needed for an electric generator is considerable, so to raise it as quickly as possible we initiated connections with partner humanitarian organizations in the region. Our joint goal is to ensure a safe and dignified stay for the children at this kindergarten, despite the aggression their country is suffering. In addition, KROKODIL will present the humanitarian campaign on March 13 at the Littfest literary festival in Sweden, thereby extending this appeal to the Scandinavian community.

Each organization collects funds independently, and all collected money will be directed to purchasing the electric generator. For us this humanitarian campaign represents ongoing solidarity with the people of Ukraine, and through regional networking it is also a symbol of the connection among all citizens of our region who recognize the importance of unconditional support for innocent victims of wartime suffering.
